This subreddit is not endorsed or sponsored by Apple Inc. I have been a Mac user for many years, and this version of Mac OS release is probably the worst I ever experienced. Currently using Mac mini with Fusion Drive. Below is what I tried: (1)Downloaded High Sierra on the AppStore, after 'Add Helper' step the system rebooted itself like nothing happened.
Log-in, launch the installer again, system rebooted itself after the last step and nothing happened. (2)Created a USB Thumb drive via terminal successfully, reboot the system by pressing 'Alt/Option' button and managed to boot to USB Thumb drive successfully. Check disk drive with First Aid via Disk Utility, it reported HD OK.
Launch the installer, after several minutes at the very end of the progress bar, installer threw this error: 'An error has occurred while preparing the installation, try running this application again.' Rebooted the system to the USB Thumb drive again, and start the whole process again, same error. Connected to local Wifi, via Terminal I updated the system time via NTP. Launch the installer again, same error. View the logs in the installer: 'Failed to prep /Volumes/os x base system 1 for brtool' Restored Mac Mini via time machine, back to Sierra, redownloaded the High Sierra installer, repeat step 1 & 2 with same result.
Downgraded Mac Mini to El Capitan, redownload High Sierra from the App Store, repeat step 1 & 2. Reset VRAM, retry step 1 & 2, same result. Tried Safe Mode, Web Recovery, same result. Restored Mac mini with Sierra, gave up and will wait for next release, unless there is something I have not tried. Please advise. Similar here with a late 2012 mini.
I don't have any exotic hardware or software combination. I'm using the stock hdd and ram that came with the machine. I also tried converting hdd to apfs and then upgrading to no avail. Thank god for time machine.
Lots of stories about failed installations on minis. Something's wrong at Apple.
First iOS 11 problems and now High Sierra. I understand QA can't test every possible scenario but MAC mini 2012 aren't uncommon. I suppose I'll wait for the first round of fixes just like I'll wait for iOS 11.1. I managed to solve this issue, before you continue, MAKE SURE YOUR DATA IS BACKUP WITH TIME MACHINE: For some reason the SSD part of my fusion drive is not working properly, when I ran the 'First Aid' on 'Disk Utility' it reported my drive was OK, but when I ran the following at 'Terminal': diskutil verifyDisk /dev/disk0 It is showing errors.
Disk0 is the SSD portion of the Fusion Drive. When I tried to repair the disk0 specifically by running the following in the terminal: diskutil repairDisk /dev/disk0 It is throwing an error saying it can't fix the issue. So the last resort is to format the /dev/disk0 by running the following code: diskutil eraseDisk /dev/disk0 At this point you need to follow Apple's guide on how to rebuild the Fusion Drive back to usable state, follow this guide: Try to install High Sierra again. I did it and it is working fine now.
